Thank you everyone who took part in this presentation, the number of groups represented was excellent. Thanks to the publicity there were lots of new people looking and many of these then joined. A very successful afternoon.

Convenors Lunch and visit of Sue Stokes.

Prior to the Thursday general meeting on the 8th November a buffet lunch was arranged for our group convenors as a thankyou for the hard work they have put in with their groups over the past year, thanks are given also to those who were unable to attend due to other commitments. Following lunch the meeting was addressed by our Regional Trustee Sue Stokes, who represents the Yorkshire and Humberside Region on the National Executive Committee. Sue spoke on the role of the convenor, previously termed leader, or as Sue said, in Barnsley we call them co-ordinators. Her point being that a convenor does not lead so much as facilitate group input to enable all its members to contribute to the ongoing learning experience and enjoy the process as it unfolds. Sue is an excellent speaker and followed with a question and answer session which enabled those present to air their views on the convenors role and confirm that their work was keeping the spirit of the U3A well and truly alive. Sue also expressed a wish to speak to our membership and the committee will ensure that this will happen in 2019. Following on Sue was briefly able to attend the general meeting where we were entertained to an excellent illustrated talk on whale watching by Ian Robinson, a very knowledgeable speaker who no doubt will be asked to speak to us again in the near future, probably on bird watching as he is expert on this topic also. All in all a very enjoyable day!.

Monthly Meetings

11th October - Driffield & Wolds member Philip Clarkson gave an interesting and educational photographic talk about a journey from Perth to Sydney in Australia. This was reference to agriculture and took 6 weeks including travelling down the longest straight road in that country.

8th November- We welcome back Ian Robinson who, last year, gave us an excellent presentation about Filey's wildlife throughout the seasons. This time his talk is entitled "Whale Watching Worldwide". Ian has visited some of the worlds best whale watching countries and his talk will also feature other wildlife he encountered.

13th December- Our Christmas Social Party where we will be entertained by the Hornsea Ukulele Group, sing some Carols and have refreshments.

Walking Groups Holiday 2018

The Walking Groups (425 and Main) Autumn Break was held this year in Scotland. The Duke of Gordon Hotel Kingussie, in the heart of the Cairngorms, played host and provided us with a very enjoyable stay. Good food and entertainment every evening, plus of course Gillian's quizzes!.
Whilst it was felt that the total cost of the package was not expensive, both the distance and five day break meant that take- up was a little low, this being overcome by non-walkers joining us for a holiday together with fellow walkers from Bridlington and Pocklington U3As.
Gillian and Alan hosted walks over the three days, having carried out a full walks and hotel recce earlier in the year and they deserve a huge thank you for their efforts, their meticulous planning made all the difference to the holiday. Thanks also go to Keith whose photographic efforts are featured. It being Scotland the weather was much as expected, wet and windy, however the upside to this was that it kept the midges away! And the super views were well worth it.
The non-walkers have all expressed their thanks for the efforts of Steve P, our coach driver for the break, his informative and entertaining banter never failed despite suffering from a heavy cold throughout and he was happy to take non-walkers to see the sights of the Cairngorms. In fact, a few of us brought his happy cold back with us.
Finally, it is fair to say that everyone felt happy that they would stay at the Duke of Gordon again, a compliment indeed to both the hotel and Cairngorm Travel who arranged the trip.
Phil Dunn.

Away Days

After this we go for lunch which will consist of a superb hot and cold buffet. They cater for special diets if notified at booking. In the afternoon there will be free time to wander.
Departure at 09.00am from Eastgate car park as usual returning from Hull at approx. 16.00 to arrive back about 17.00.
All inclusive £25.00 Contact Maureen Blackwell 01377 253183 or treasurer@driffieldwoldsu3a.org.uk
Days Away will recommence in March 2019. Any suggestions for destinations are welcome.

Driffield & Wolds U3A Drama Group

Stephen Wells is forming a Drama Group for the Driffield & Wolds U3A. The aim will be to present full length plays suitable for our members to enjoy taking part in, and for the wider public to support the performances.
The group will begin by choosing shorter one act plays to give as many people as possible the opportunity to take part.
In addition to actors we would be looking for many other skills. Costume making, scenery construction, lighting and sound, front-of-house, programme printing to name just a few. This will open the opportunity for other groups within our U3A to work together.
Stephen has been a professional actor, magician and director all my working life and used to produce stage shows for Butlins. When based in Scarborough he founded the award-winning Crossfade Theatre which presented hugely successful productions using amateur actors.
He has been a member of the Magic Circle and Actors Equity for over 50 years and is ready to provide direction and give all the help and support needed to create a strong group.
